Staff Spotlight – Lauren McDonald, Business Development Director
  1. Hey Lauren, we’d love to get to know you better! Can you give us the scoop on how you landed the role as solv’s Business Development Director?

“Well I’ve worked for solv for many years, starting back in 2010.  It was very small back then and as we grew and moved to bigger premises we needed someone to steer the helm with implementing processes and keep on the pulse of the changing environment and technology advancements.  I love change so it was a natural step for me to take on this role and look at better more efficient ways of operating.”

  1. Being a Director sees you wearing a lot of different hats! What are some key responsibilities and challenges you face in your role?

“Yes many hats indeed, You have to make strategic decisions, keep an eye on everyday operations, handle finance, and lead the team to meet company goals. It’s not always easy, there’s the challenge of running competing priorities, dealing with any curve balls that come, and managing team dynamics. Success in this role comes down to good communication, leadership skills, and the ability to go with the flow as much as possible in a fast-paced environment whilst keeping a cool head.”

  1. Can you share a memorable moment or achievement during your time at solv that you’re particularly proud of?

“When we totally revamped our old-school systems and went all digital, that was such a proud moment for me.”

  1. At solv, we’ve got this family-like vibe going on – how do you foster a positive and collaborative work environment within your team?

“I bribe them with donuts and coffee 😊 no, I am a very people orientated person, I like to get to know all the staff, their wellbeing is important to me and if there is ever an issue, I like to think anyone can come to me and I can help them resolve it.  We have a very respectful team within solv throughout all the divisions, we all share similar values which is important for teamwork and customer service.”

  1. In what ways has working at solv shaped your perspective on the trades industry?

“I’ve seen it take many forms, from having shortages of young people embarking on trades back in the 00’s to getting through that period and now unfortunately we’ve come full circle back to that point again with very few options when it comes to learning a trade.  The last few years have been difficult with no sitting government or support for businesses when it comes to employment and training for staff.  I would like to see young people being encouraged more to get into trades with more variety of routes to entry, Tradespeople are the backbone of society, without them things would fall apart pretty rapidly.  They’re often not given enough credit.”

  1. If you could have a conversation with your younger self, what career advice would you give?

“Believe in yourself and your abilities, don’t be kept down by other people’s opinions or beliefs, and don’t be afraid to fight your corner.”

“I like to take walks in the better weather and see friends, In the winter I like to get home, get the fire on and read a good book or else play my piano.”
