Keeping people safe at work might not always look the same from one day to the next—but for Zane, that’s exactly what makes his job interesting. As our in-house Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) technician, Zane plays a vital role in helping workplaces stay compliant, safe, and running smoothly. We caught up with him to chat about how he got into the field, what a day in his life looks like, and a few things you might not know about him outside of work.
How did you get into PAT testing?
I got into PAT testing after working as an appliance engineer. I wanted a role with more flexibility, and PAT testing seemed like a great fit. After completing my training and certification, I started working with solv to help businesses meet safety standards.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day involves travelling to different workplaces—offices, warehouses, etc.—to inspect and test electrical appliances. I check plugs, cables, and casings for damage, run insulation and earth continuity tests, and label items as “Pass” or “Fail.” I also provide reports for clients to keep them compliant with safety laws.
What’s the most common issue you come across when testing equipment?
The most common issue is damaged cables, often from being trapped under furniture or improperly coiled. Another frequent problem is incorrect fuse ratings in plugs, which can lead to overheating and potential fire hazards.
What’s the most unusual item you’ve ever had to PAT test?
I once had to PAT test a bubble machine. The function test was fun for this one!
Why is PAT testing so important for businesses?
PAT testing helps businesses ensure their electrical appliances are safe, reducing the risk of fires, electric shocks, and compliance fines. It’s also crucial for insurance purposes—many policies require regular testing to remain valid.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy the variety—no two days are the same. I also like knowing that my work helps prevent accidents and keeps people safe in their workplaces. Meeting different people and working in various environments is a bonus too.
If someone wanted to get into PAT testing, what advice would you give them?
Get the right training and qualifications—courses like City & Guilds are a good starting point. Hands-on experience is key, so try shadowing a PAT tester if possible. Investing in good testing equipment and learning how to interact professionally with clients will also help you succeed.
What’s one skill or hobby you have outside of work?
I enjoy DIY and fixing things around the house. It’s pretty satisfying to repair something instead of replacing it, and it ties in well with my job.
If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go?
I’d love to go to South America somewhere, maybe Argentina to see a football match and practice my Spanish.
What’s your go-to takeaway order?
Has to be a curry from the Shimla on Cregagh Road. Either Jalfrezi or Balti!
Tea or coffee?
Coffee in the morning. Tea for after lunch and dinner. Hobnobs too.
Early bird or night owl?
Early bird, mostly out of necessity. Getting an early start helps me get through my work more efficiently, but I do enjoy a lie-in when I get the chance!
