Is Your Home Heated with Electricity? You Might Need a New Meter Before June 2025

If you have electric heating, there’s a chance your home is using something called a Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meter—a system that’s being permanently switched off on Monday 30 June 2025. That means if your meter isn’t replaced before then, your heating and hot water could stop working properly.

want to switch

Here’s what you need to know—and what action to take now.

What is an RTS meter?

RTS meters receive a radio signal to control when your electricity switches between different rates, or when specific appliances—like storage heaters or water heaters—turn on or off.

They’re most commonly used for:

  • Economy 7 or Economy 10 tariffs (cheaper electricity at night)
  • Special tariffs like Comfort Plus or Total Heat Total Control
  • Homes with no gas connection, relying solely on electric heating

The problem? The radio signal these meters rely on is outdated and is being shut down for good on 30 June 2025.

How can I tell if I have an RTS meter?

You may have one if:

  • Your home is heated by electricity
  • Your tariff has different rates depending on the time of day
  • You see a separate black box beside your electricity meter labelled radio teleswitch or radio telemeter
  • Your bill shows two “S” numbers (supply numbers)
  • You’ve had a letter from your electricity supplier about replacing your meter

If any of the above sounds familiar, now’s the time to act.

What should I do?

Contact your electricity supplier as soon as possible to arrange a meter replacement. Your supplier is responsible for changing it—and it won’t cost you anything.

In most cases, they’ll upgrade you to a smart meter. If that’s not possible, they’ll fit another suitable meter. Either way, it must be replaced before RTS is switched off.

⚠️ Important: If anyone asks you to pay for a meter replacement, it could be a scam. Always deal directly with your supplier.

Do I need to change my tariff?

That’s up to your electricity supplier. When arranging the meter replacement, they should explain your options and let you know if your tariff will change. In many cases, you can stay on the same tariff after switching to a smart meter.

Why upgrade to a smart meter?

Smart meters offer a few key benefits:

  • More accurate bills (no need for manual readings)
  • Easier tracking of energy use
  • Potential to join money-saving energy schemes

They can also automatically manage your time-of-use tariff (like Economy 7) more efficiently than older meters.

What if I don’t want a smart meter?

That’s okay—you don’t have to accept a smart meter. But if you’ve got an RTS meter, it still needs to be replaced. Your supplier may be able to install a meter that works without the ‘smart’ features if that’s your preference.

Renting? Here’s what you need to know

  • If you pay the energy bills directly, you can contact your supplier and request a replacement yourself. You don’t need your landlord’s permission, but it’s a good idea to let them know.
  • If your landlord pays the bills, they’re responsible for arranging the replacement. You should ask them what steps they’re taking to make sure the meter is updated.

Either way, someone needs to act before June 2025 to avoid disruption.

What happens if the meter isn’t changed?

If you still have an RTS meter after 30 June 2025, your heating and hot water systems might:

  • Stop working
  • Come on at the wrong times
  • Stay on constantly
  • Start costing you more money due to incorrect timing

It’s not worth the risk—make sure your supplier gets your meter sorted in good time.
