Regulatory changes on use of fluorescent lighting

At solv, we believe that staying up to date with regulatory changes is essential for protecting the environment and public health. This is why we want to remind you that a significant change to the RoHS Directive is taking effect this month.

What is the RoHS Directive?

The RoHS Directive has been in place since 2006 and restricts the use of hazardous substances in electronic products, including mercury in lamps. As of 13th March 2022, 12 amendments to the RoHS Directive will end a wide range of exemptions for the use of mercury in lamps while allowing exemptions where it is technically impracticable to install substitutes.

Changes to the RoHS Directive

One of the key changes is the inclusion of previously exempt lamps, such as T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps, HPD lamps and special-purpose lamps like UV-C. This means that manufacturers and users will need to carefully review their inventory and consider their options for alternatives.

Another significant change is the ban on all compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases (CFLni), which takes effect from this month, February 2023. From August 2023, T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps will also be banned for general use. The regulations will allow an extension to the exemption for HPD lamps of 3 to 5 years, as well as an extension to the exemption for special-purpose lamps of 3 to 5 years.

What do these changes mean for consumers and businesses?

At solv, we understand that compliance with the RoHS Directive can be challenging, but it is essential for protecting the environment and public health. Our team of experts can provide support in identifying alternative products and solutions that meet regulatory requirements, without compromising on quality or efficiency.

As a replacement for banned fluorescent lamps, all LED lights provided by solv come with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. In addition to the warranty, these LED lights offer approximately 50-60% savings on energy costs, providing a cost-effective and efficient solution for businesses and consumers. The 5-year warranty also saves clients on maintenance costs by eliminating the need to replace old fittings.

We also offer a range of services to help manage inventory and dispose of lamps in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Our goal is to provide our clients with the tools and knowledge they need to make informed decisions and achieve compliance with the RoHS Directive.

If you have any questions or concerns about the recent changes to the RoHS Directive, or need assistance with compliance, please don’t hesitate to contact us at solv.
