Introduction:
The Construction Employers Federation Limited (CEF) is the sole certified representative body for the construction industry in Northern Ireland. At their headquarters on Malone Road, they sought to modernise their lighting and multimedia facilities, primarily in the boardroom which hadn’t been refurbished for decades and featured outdated chandeliers. They wanted to transition to modern LED lighting while maintaining a design that complemented the original moulding and other original aesthetic features. CEF had engaged solv as a long-standing partner, as electrical contractor on this transformation.
Defining the Challenge:
The primary challenge was to retrofit the old-style boardroom with new LED lighting while preserving its aesthetic integrity. This included upgrading lighting with new modern fittings. The boardroom also required a modern multimedia setup, including power tracks, VGA/HDMI, and audio tracks to connect to a TV, as well as power source tracking in two locations integrated into an existing wooden table, without causing damage.
Discovery Phase: Uncovering Solutions:
solv brought a lighting design specialist to the site. This specialist created a detailed plan with imagery of different lighting options, allowing CEF to choose the best fit. They opted for a simple yet effective modern circular lighting design.
Tailoring the Solution: A Personalised Approach:
A variety of light fittings and designs were presented to CEF, referencing previous projects to help the customer visualise potential outcomes. The chosen design was both modern and energy-efficient, utilising LED lighting to reduce energy consumption significantly.
Implementation Chronicles: Making It Happen:
The renovation was carefully coordinated with CEF and other contractors. A programme of works was drawn up, agreed together with both CEF and the other contractors. The electrical work in the boardroom took less than a week, although the overall renovation spanned several weeks. Key tasks included:
- Underfloor Work: Installed power tracks and multimedia points, cutting into the existing table to integrate data points, HDMI, VGA, and mini audio jacks, all concealed with stainless steel flip-up lids.
- Lighting Installation: Ensured lights were installed at the correct heights and fixed points, in consultation with CEF.
- Cable Management: Installed two floor boxes with 6-way Ethernet switches, stainless steel cable management, and various data points.
- Integration with Other Contractors: Coordinated closely with flooring and painting teams to ensure seamless integration and minimal disruption.
Feedback Loop: Listening and Adapting:
Throughout the project, solv maintained open communication with CEF, adjusting plans as needed to accommodate the evolving renovation schedule. This involved frequent consultations on the height and placement of lights and ongoing updates to ensure the customer’s satisfaction.

The modern LED lighting significantly reduced the office’s energy costs and enhanced its aesthetic appeal. CEF was particularly pleased with the improved lighting in the boardroom and subsequently engaged solv to upgrade the lighting with similar fittings on the stairs, landing and then also to update the lighting separately throughout the rest building. The transition from old fluorescent and halogen lights to LED fixtures resulted in:
